If you want to know something, and they start getting very evasive/quiet about the answer, they probably failed their save. Only Zone of truth is an area of effect spell, so by RAW you can't tell if the opponent saved or not, which really makes this a completely useless spell You do not sense when creatures succeed on saves against effect and area spells. Likewise, if a creature's saving throw succeeds against a targeted spell, you sense that the spell has failed. Just to add to this from the section on saving throws-Ī creature that successfully saves against a spell that has no obvious physical effects feels a hostile force or a tingle, but cannot deduce the exact nature of the attack. So can a caster tell if the target made their save or not? by the wording it does not seem so, but if they can't the spell becomes completely useless. Creatures who leave the area are free to speak as they choose. Therefore, they may avoid answering questions to which they would normally respond with a lie, or they may be evasive as long as they remain within the boundaries of the truth. Affected creatures are aware of this enchantment. Each potentially affected creature is allowed a save to avoid the effects when the spell is cast or when the creature first enters the emanation area. Creatures within the emanation area (or those who enter it) can't speak any deliberate and intentional lies.
